What Are Pantone, CMYK, PMS And Vectors?

Modified on Wed, 30 Jul at 12:22 PM

When placing a branded order, you’ll often hear terms like Pantone, CMYK, PMS, and vector files. Here’s what they mean and why they’re important for printing your logo or artwork correctly.

CMYK – For Full-Color Printing

CMYK stands for Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, and Black. These are the four ink colors used in standard full-color printing.

  • Used in digital and offset printing

  • Ideal for gradients, photos, and colorful designs

  • Color results may vary slightly depending on the material and printer settings

CMYK is not ideal for printing exact brand colors — slight shifts are normal.

PMS / Pantone – For Exact Color Matching

PMS stands for Pantone Matching System, a standardized color system. Pantone colors are pre-mixed inks with precise formulas.

  • Ensures consistent color across materials and print methods

  • Perfect for brand guidelines and corporate colors

  • Each color has a code (e.g. Pantone 186 C)

Use PMS when you need color consistency across multiple products.

Spot Color vs. Full Color

  • CMYK = Full Color → For complex designs and photographs

  • PMS = Spot Color → For solid, flat colors (logos, brand marks)

Ask your Account Manager which method fits your artwork best.

What Is a Vector File?

A vector is a type of graphic that can be resized without losing quality. It’s essential for clean, sharp printing.

  • Common formats: .AI, .EPS, .PDF (with editable paths)

  • Unlike raster files (JPG, PNG), vectors are made of lines, not pixels

  • Required for printing logos clearly and accurately

Not sure if your file is a vector? We’ll check it for you.
